ABOUT THE PLAY

“I’d give you some violets - but they withered all when my father died.”

After dying in the events of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Ophelia finds herself stuck somewhere between life and the afterlife, where she is told she must remain until she has come to terms with what - and who - drove her to take her own life. With the help of the dead jester Yorick, as well as several women from other Shakespeare works, Ophelia desperately searches for a method to the madness, and flowers for her bouquet. To be or not to be, she asks, except - no. That’s not hers.

A rich, engaging exploration of the inner workings of a character that has captivated audiences for centuries, Withered All asks its audience to listen, and shows us a girl who might’ve sounded far less mad - if only they had known what she was trying to say.

THE CHARACTERS

OPHELIA, daughter to Polonius. Overflowing with sorrow, love, and life - or at least, she used to be. Hopes all will be well.

YORICK, a Clown. Mischievous, mysterious, witty, and wise. Skilled at putting on a show.

HAMLET, Prince of Denmark. Tormented, tragic. Wants to be good, but fails.

LADY MACBETH, former Queen of Scotland. Full of nightmares, and empty of remorse.

PHOEBE, a shepherdess. Tired of the way things are, but unable to leave them behind.

ROSALIND, daughter to the banished Duke. Unsatisfied with the way things are, but unable to admit it.

LAERTES, son to Polonius. Brotherly and scholarly in equal measures.

POLONIUS, the Lord Chamberlain. A great bumbling fool, yet beloved.

KATHERINA, the Shrew. Tamed and then untamed again. Loud laugh and a biting wit.

HERO, daughter to Leonato. A terrible gossip and a worse tease. Easily delighted.

GERTRUDE, the Queen, Hamlet’s mother, now wife of Claudius. Hand-wringing and wistful.

CLAUDIUS, King of Denmark, Hamlet’s uncle. Selfish and cunning.

MIRANDA, daughter to Prospero. Warm. Just a few steps removed from wild girl.

The PRINCESS of France. Philosophical and verbose, and very French.

JULIET, daughter to Capulet. A ghost, a shadow of a lost and lonely girl, ever in mourning.

DESDEMONA, wife to Othello. Another ghost, this one vengeful and bitter. A broken soul.
