Withered All

“I’d give you some violets - but they withered all when my father died.”

After dying in the events of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Ophelia finds herself stuck somewhere between life and the afterlife, where she is told she must remain until she has come to terms with what - and who - drove her to take her own life. With the help of the dead jester Yorick, as well as several women from other Shakespeare works, Ophelia desperately searches for a method to the madness, and flowers for her bouquet. To be or not to be, she asks, except - no. That’s not hers.

A rich, engaging exploration of the inner workings of a character that has captivated audiences for centuries, Withered All asks its audience to listen, and shows us a girl who might’ve sounded far less mad - if only they had known what she was trying to say.

CAST and CREW

Ophelia - Berlyn Johns

Berlyn Johns is so thrilled to bring this version of Ophelia to the stage. This is her second show with Kingswood Players, her first performance with them was She Stoops to Conquer as Kate.

Recently you may have seen her all over Utah with Grassroots Shakespeare Company, Most recently as Tranio in Taming of the Shrew and Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet.

Yorick - Alyx Vaughn

Alexandra Vaughn is a local actor, singer, writer, and fight choreographer. In addition to her role as Yorick, she’s taken on plenty of more traditional Shakespearean roles with the Grassroots Shakespeare company, such as Hero in “Much Ado About Nothing”, or Tybalt in “Romeo and Juliet”.

Alyx also holds a position with the GSC as their resident fight director, and is one of the founding members of the Kingswood Players.

Katherina/Laertes - Laura Wright

Laura Wright is thrilled to be a part of Withered All! They have recently had a long run of Shakespeare shows with the Grassroots company.

They could be seen as Lucentio in Taming of the Shrew, Paris in Romeo and Juliet and Robin in Doctor Faustus. Laura would like to thank their partner for being so supportive of all of their shenanigans and always been there to support them during their shows.

Juliet - Jessie Heaton

Jessie is an artistic little gremlin monster thing who has been freakishly obsessed with the performing arts since she was a wee little lad. They have been dancing and singing for a long long time.

Jessie has a little baby who will literally scream for ice cream and a husband who kinda looks like Johnny Depp sometimes. She would like to thank them for keeping her life chaotic and full of zest.

Red Eye Shadow

Lady Macbeth - Harper Mcgee

Harper also never submitted a bio.

Phoebe/Miranda - Alyssa Vaughn

Alyssa, too, is bio-less.

Assistant Director - Courtney Christensen

Courtney has been seen recently as Cymbeline in Shakespeare's Cymbeline with GSC, Sara in Stop Kiss at UVU, and Annabella in The 39 Steps at UVU. This is their first show directing or stage-managing and are excited to be on the technical side of things.

This is their seventh show this year, and ninth new works show of their career. Courtney is also a part of the Grassroots Shakespeare Company and UVU's Hot Tea Improv team. When not running between theater extracurriculars Courtney can be found sleeping. (It takes a lot of energy to do all this and more). The definition of "I can't, I have rehearsal!"

Hamlet - J. Attridge

J. Attridge is an "actor" according to their Instagram bio and the imdb page their mom is very proud of. They are more accurately described as a silly goose.

You may have seen them as Mephistophilis in Grassroots Shakespeare Company's production of Doctor Faustus or as Petruchio in GSC's Drag Taming of the Shrew. Don't talk to them; they'll try to convince you to play RPG To-Go.

Polonius - Michael Lenk

Michael’s favorite Shakespearean drama is Hamlet, and he loves the art of adaptation and retelling of stories, so “Withered All” was the perfect play for him to start acting in!

He has many varied interests, from linguistics and sketching, to computers and cooking. He loves his co-actors, and dislikes talking about himself for too long, so go read about his friends and enjoy the show!

Hero - Jessie Pew

Jessie (she/her) is an actress/dramaturg/writer originally from Houston, TX. She’s found a particular joy in participating in new works surrounding Shakespeare, as it combines her love of acting, writing, and general tomfoolery.

She’s absolutely loved being involved with Withered All and finally being allowed to play a “mean girl” character! Offstage, she’s completing an MFA in Creative Writing and an MA in English studies at Arcadia University.

Desdemona - Chase Schetsalaar

Chase Schetselaar is happy to be back on the stage as an actor playing Desdemona. Previously, he's been seen with the Grassroots Shakespeare company as a violist on the Tempest and Faustus, and as an actor in Richard III and As You Like It.

Chase recently graduated from UVU with a degree in Family Science, and spends his free time at the university as Utah Valley Esports' Director of Events. He'd like to thank his three cats, Spartacus, Nanook, and Turtle, for getting him through the rehearsal process.

Director - Miranda Morenzi

As well as directing Withered All, Miranda is also the playwright. This story has been in her heart and head for quite some time, and it has been a remarkable experience watching it come to life.

When she's not directing, costuming, producing, and stage managing a show she wrote, Miranda can be found acting. Most recently in Grassroots' The Taming of the Shrew as Grumio, and The Tempest - as, amusingly, Miranda.
